A meeting of the Parish Council was held in the John Ross Suite on Wednesday April 9th, 2008 at 7. 00 p.m.

Village sign:  Cllr. Maureen Howarth enquired on progress of repair and the Clerk undertook to contact Mr. Raban-Williams on behalf of the Estate.

New footpath – High Street, B6274:  Cllr. Brian Metcalfe reported that Mr. I. Beighton  had promised to discuss the kerb side height which is proving to be quite dangerous to pedestrians.

Richmondshire East Interactive Area Meeting:  Cllr. David Allison reported on a very well attended and “new style” meeting  which was regarded as very successful.

Closure of Village Post Offices:  The Parish Council is delighted that the Post Office is to remain open, which is of vital importance to the community.

20 m.p.h. speed limit in Millgate: Clerk to  contact Highways, regarding the results of  recent  speed tests.

Correspondence:-

1) Flooding: Receipt of a letter from Mr. Woodford of Highways,  stating that, when resources allow, additional survey work will be carried out in the village, to prevent similar flooding of last year.

2) Grass cutting – 2008 season:  Quotation received and accepted.

3) Increased Hanson Aggregate Lorry Movements through Gilling West to Catterick Garrison:

Following several complaints from residents, Cllr. M. Howarth wrote to Hanson Aggregates at Wetherby, regarding lorries from Forcett Quarry failing to use the new A66 and A1 route and instead directing lorries traveling noisily and at speed, through Gilling village. The situation contributes significantly to a negative amenity impact to residents, in terms of road safety and noise pollution in particular. Although to date Cllr. Howarth had not received a reply to this letter, it is hoped to set up a meeting soon with the company to discuss these matters further.

4) Heritage Grants: Lettering of War memorial and Richmondshire Area Committee grant:  An amount of £300 has been received for improvements to village entry signs, milestone, seats, war memorial and public footpath notice.

Any other business:

Cllr. William Heslop  reported that from 9th June, Gilling parish would be included in the new recycling  programme.  He also reported on planning for affordable housing  in the District  in the future and undertook to keep the Parish Council informed.

Gilling West road signs at each entrance to the village, require renovation.

Cllr. Michael Gauntlett  complained that the stile into the Millennium Field is difficult to cross.

Cllr. Gauntlett also reported on a meeting relating to Winter Maintenance.

Date of next meeting:  28th May at 7.30p.m.
