That time of year is almost upon us Mischief night, Halloween night and Bonfire night when the mischief overspills to anti social behaviour in modern day terms which can be spread over more than one night. Letters are being circulated to local shops to be aware of selling flour and eggs to youngsters and also to off licences with regards to alcohol sales. Patrols are being increased in relevant areas to help prevent any out of hand behaviour.
Poaching incidents are on the increase with males going on land without permission with dogs after rabbits and deer where at times sheep are worried also. If you see any such activity please report it to North Yorkshire Police.
A good result occurred in September involving the Gilling West Borderwatch patrol when they saw a suspect van driving slowly on the road between Richmond and Ravensworth. They reported it to the police via the allocated police radios and the vehicle was stopped at Whashton crossroads. The van containing 3 males from the County Durham area was found to be ladened with the dressed top stones from walls in the area including Aske estate and a property in Forcett. The males were arrested and are being dealt with. This has been an ongoing problem for the last 2 years.
As always I am on the look out for anyone interested in being involved in Borderwatch. This is an initiative that is definitely having a positive effect in helping to reduce rural crime with reported incidents and information of suspect vehicles, after which we call at vehicle keepers addresses in County Durham and Cleveland and found out who they are. This helps to give them the message that the residents of North Yorkshire are vigilant.
