April
26 - Cricket returns to Gilling West's cricket ground for the first time in 14/15 years when Richmondshire CC's 5th XI defeated Haughton in a 35 over league match. The game was played in sunshine on a square that had suffered from recent floods followed by a very dry spell. A wicket had been cut on the edge of the square and performed satisfactorily - but much of the square had to be covered by tarpaulin during the game. About 30 spectators turned up to watch what turned out to be a well fought match.
The fixture list indicates that the ground will stage 2 games per week involving Richmondshire CC's 4th/5th or Junior teams.
May
6 - General Election - Village Hall opened for voting 7am to 10pm.
7 - Gilling Farmers' Ball which was held at the Morritt Arms Hotel was a great success. The Committee wish to thank everyone who supported the event and all the people who very kindly donated items for the auction. A profit of £907.00 was made for the Great North Air Ambulance.
10 - Village Hall roof restoration begins. This work is planned to last 4-5 weeks.
16 - Neville Patterson - local resident and well-liked frequenter of "The White Swan", sadly passed away this weekend. As Stuart Belton's poem indicates, Neville will be much missed. The picture - also by Stuart - shows him giving Ann Collinson a cuddle in the bar.
30 - Gilling Old Mill Cottages staged their first wedding reception today in a marquee set up on the lawn between the buildings and Gilling Beck.
July
23 - Aske Hall: Alternative plans for a controversial housing estate have been submitted to Richmondshire council in the hope that new access arrangements will be passed by planning officials.
The proposed plans for 48 houses to be built on land between Stanley Grove and Laburnam Grove, Richmond, has been the subject to a long-running row about how residents would gain access to the estate. They prefer this to be built off Gilling Road, but the Highways Agency and the developers had the opinion that this would not be safe. A public meeting has been called on 27th.

There has been four thefts of motor vehicles in the Richmond Rural (West) Wards during August, with three of them being in the Barton Area. On three of these occasions the vehicle keys have been left with the vehicle. Your Local Officers are PC John Wilbor and PCSO Becky Hart.
Footnote:
Persons were arrested in connection with the outbuilding burglary where the hedge trimmer was stolen.
At the end of July 4 males were reported for daytime poaching and their vehicle seized at Newton Morrell. Robust action is being taken against such offenders and I am attending court on 3 occasions during September all for poaching activity. The fields are being harvested now so this activity may increase again. We are having successes against those involved but they are becoming wary of coming into Richmondshire. However we still need to be vigilant and report such activity and any other suspicious or strange incidents or vehicles and persons as in the type of crime mentioned at the top of this report.
If you wish to become actively involved in initiatives such as Borderwatch or you wish to be on the messaging system called Ringmaster please contact me. Thank you.
