STREET LIGHTING

1934 - 'A suggestion was made about lighting the Village with Electricity'. A letter would be sent to Richmond Borough Council to see if they had a scheme whereby light could be brought into the village. It is minuted later that year the Clerk was asked to provide names and addresses of Councillors to the Newcastle Electricity Supply Co. As a result, a plan showing where it was expected to erect the poles for the Electric Lighting was received. A request was sent to Newcastle Electricity Supply Co. asking for a representative to visit Gilling to explain costs and 'offer items' at  a future Parish Meeting.

1935 - The Clerk advised that he had had a meeting with a representative of the Electricity Supply Co. who gave details of the costs according to the position of the poles fixed. He was asked to obtain a detailed list in writing.

1949 - The Electricity Board  asked for the following information of the Parish: total area, population, number of occupied dwellings. A plan was put before a Special Parish Meeting giving an estimate of the cost of erecting 11 lights for the Village, including the new houses - when erected. This project had been brought about by the recently introduced by the Government's 'Street Lighting Act'.

1959 - At a Parish Meeting, it was agreed that the Rural District Council should become the lighting authority for the Parish taking over the financial responsibilites hitherto vested with the Parish.

1978  - As an experiment, 2 lights had been fitted with higher voltage bulbs. The illumination in the areas of the lamps had been greatly improved. The Parish Council decided to write requesting the remaining lamps be fitted accordingly.

1986 - Noted that the RDC were in the process of upgrading the street lighting in the village. The comments in the 1987 minutes confirmed that this had been successfully completed.
