On Thursdays, there will be a Compline (Night Prayer) Service  at 8pm.

A quiet reflective prayer time at the end of the day, lasting about 20 minutes. An opportunity for peace in our busy world. All very welcome.

A packed congregation greeted the Marske Choir from Swaledale in St Agatha’s Church, Gilling West, on Sunday, October 9th. 1916

They took part in Songs of Praise for Autumn and helped to make it a joyful evening with their singing under the inspirational direction of Lindsay and Nick Ibbotson.

Items ranged from the very traditional “Laudate Dominum” to the punchy, “O Happy Day” and John Rutter’s  lyrical “The Lord bless you and keep you”.

The choir, though fairly small, has a number of excellent soloists. The congregation were treated to solos from Rebecca Atkinson (“The Lord is my Shepherd”), Andrea Busby (“O Happy Day”), Nick Ibbotson (“The Holy City”), Sophie Montgomery (“Laudate Dominum”), and Ann Myers (“The Old Rugged Cross”) and to duets featuring Martin Wallis and Rebecca Atkinson (“Panis Angelicus”) and Lindsay Ibbotson and Sophie Montgomery sang “The Flower Duet” as beautifully as any professional opera singers!

But the service was a congregational evening also and many from the congregation also contributed with inspirational readings and solos  from  Pam Herring and Phoebe Jewsbury

Perhaps, most importantly, everyone, from a babe in arms to a ninety two year old, enjoyed the opportunity to sing favourite hymns with great enthusiasm.  The church organist, Michael Moran, was in his element .

At the end of the service, people had the opportunity to wind down with refreshments, having enjoyed a memorable evening praising God in words and music.
